Subway Reflexions

The subterranean landscape of New York City provided fertile grounds for this series. The equalizing nature of the subway, where people from every race, class and ethnicity share a limited space, while shifting between their private and public personas, is intriguing. Mesmerized by illusion, reflection, the enigma of motion and the passage of time, I strive to embrace these complexities in each of my pieces.

In creating each piece for this series, I first chose several photographs that I imagined would work well together as a singular image. The photos could have been taken in different stations and at different times. I then mounted these prints onto a panel and began painting around and between them, merging them into one imaginary scene. What you see above and in the following two pieces are examples of each painting, both before and after the oil paint was applied.
